by Minka Gantenbein: by Glen Starkey: Their new album, "Common Distractions," is their most mature recording to date. Soaring anthems, vocal harmonies, wailing guitars-it seems TAS has finally come into their own. "Common Distractions" is the band's third recording, but only their first full length. I've never seen a band take a more methodical, reasoned approach toward success: two demo EPs that have sold more than one thousand copies; a constant refining of their sound; sponsorships by companies like Vans shoes; inclusion on internationally released compilation CDs; impressive showings at music showcases like the VH1 Route Tour; press magazines like Spin, BAM, RIP and High Times. These guys have been doing everything right. On their new album, Beatlesesque songwriting combines with Seattle style crunching guitars and anthemlike Alice in Chains soaring vocals. Part of the album's power comes from the driving rhythm section sound-the drums and bass were engineered by Eric Kretz of Stone Temple Pilots, which may explain the slightly grungy Seattle sound. The recording's lead track, "An Apology," is getting some regional airplay in the Bay Area, and I'm guessing a couple other songs have potential radio appeal, especially "Destination." -Glen Starkey New Times Weekly |
